Biography

Hugh John Maynard was the son of John Maynard and Flora McLean.

His first wife was Leila Isabella Warren; they were married on April 4 1888. Leila died in 1892. ^{[1] [2]}

His second wife was Annie Minerva McArthur. ^[3]

By 1901, Hugh John and Annie had one daughter, Susan. By 1911, Susan, Hatfield, Lilly (March 1903), Jennie and Hazel (October 1908) were at home. Other children, from the PEI Births database, were Delores Blanch (March 1903) who could be Lillian, Hugh John (October 1908), Henry Russell (1911) and Frederick Courtney (1916).

Hugh John died March 1917.

Never, perhaps, in the history of a community were its inhabitants more deeply affected, never more visible signs of sadness and sorrow than was the case in Port Hill when it was learned that one of the most useful and valued citizens on Friday afternoon, March 2, in the person of Mrs Hugh J. Maynard...The deceased had been in failing health since early autumn but was always so hopeful and cheerful that his relatives and friends looked for an early recovery. He had been up and around every day attending to the work of the farm until the day of his death which was sudden and unexpected. He was a kind and loving husband and parent a friend in need always ready and willing to respond where help was required. He took a great interest in school matters and for many years was one of the trustees of Port Hill School.
