Rank: Private

Joseph was born in 1750. He was the son of Joseph Maynard and Abigail Gennings.[1]

He lived in Framingham, Massachusetts, on his father's place later occupied by Aaron Bullard, before removing to Goshen, Massachusetts about 1788, and in 1808 to Cazenovia, New York (formerly Whitestown).[2][3]

In 1800, he was enumerated in the 1800 U. S. census living in Goshen, Massachusetts, with 1 male and 2 females under 10 years of age; 2 males between 10-14 years of age; 1 male and 1 female between 15-25 years of age; 1 male (Joseph himself) and 2 females 45+ years of age.[4]

On July 10, 1808, he was recorded at the First Presbyterian Church in Cazenovia, New York.[5][6] He is very likely the "J. Maynard" recorded living in Cazenovia in the 1810 U. S. census.[7]

On May 5, 1775, Joseph Maynard and Deborah Twitchell were united in marriage. They were parents of the following children, all probably born in Framingham and Goshen:[2][8]

  1. Polly, b. 6 Nov 1775; d. 1 Jan 1778, burnt to death
  2. Debby, b. 19 Dec 1777; m. Aaron Putney
  3. Tabby
  4. Joseph, bapt. April 1782; m. Margaret Putney
  5. Nabby, bapt. May 1782; d. 14 Dec 1784
  6. Nelly, b. 20 May 1782
  7. John, bapt. 1 Aug 1784; m. Sarah Putney
  8. Nathan, b. 14 May 1787; m. Polly Putney
  9. Polly, bapt. April 1790
  10. Nabby, m. Moses Putney
  11. Needham, bapt. 27 Jan 1799 in Goshen

Joseph served in the Revolutionary War. His service is described as the following:[9]

MAYNARD, Joseph. Private, Capt. Lawson Buckminster's (2d) co., Col. Abner Perry's regt.; enlisted July 28, 1780; discharged Aug. 7, 1780; service, 14 days, including 3 days (70 miles) travel home; company marched to Rhode Island on an alarm.

On February 19, 1814, he acknowledged a deed made between himself, his wife, Deborah Maynard, and Ebenezer Dunton, all of Smithfield, Madison County, New York.[10] Smithfield was set off from Cazenovia in 1807.

Joseph Maynard died after February 7, 1815, when he and his wife Deborah "of the town of Smithfield" acknowledged a deed,[11] and November 15, 1815, when Deborah Maynard, "relict of Joseph Maynard", and Joseph Maynard, his son, were granted administration of his estate. Joseph Maynard (Sr.) was described as being of Ontario County, New York, and having died in the state of New York.[12] His inventory was appraised at $2175.08 on November 5, 1821.[13]
