Biography

Rachael Mayne was born about 1640-2 in York, York, MA. She was the daughter of John Mayne and Elizabeth Laurie. She passed away in July 1695 in York, York, MA.

Citing statement taken from Savage: John Maine/Mayne b Devon, England, 1607, perhaps came to America with Thomas Weston's Wessagusset company ship Sparrow, in 1622, where he worked as a fisherman, off the banks at York, Me. He had two sons-in-law killed in an Indian Attack -Stephen and Nathan Premble (Preble) - Rachel and Priscilla's husbands who were brothers. Rachel married Joseph Carlisle and died giving birth to Joseph Jr. Priscella married Joseph Carroll....

Stephen married Rachel Main (b. ca. 1664, d. ca 1748). They had two children who were alive at the time of Stephen’s death in 1691, and a third born shortly after.

Rachel 3, b. 7 Feb. 1687/8 Jemima 3 b. 6 Mar. 1690/1 Stephen 3 b. 15 Jan. 1692/3 (probably Abraham (2) Preble’s error for “1691/2”.

During Stephen’s lifetime, he was immersed in the life of York, a coastal town busy with the ocean, the farms, the trade along the coast.

The town made grants of land to Stephen Preble between 1679 and 1681 when he was about 25. He was part of an influential family, since substantial lands and public offices were held by both father and brother. He is probably the Stephen mentioned by Banks as owning a horse, a mare, and 2 colts worth £8 at a time when horses were not yet common. His house, 1670, still stands in York.

Serious Indian attacks were made on the town and outlying districts, and many died. Little help was to be had from England or Boston, where the provence was governed as part of Massachusetts Bay Colony. Stephen and his brother Joseph were ambushed and killed by Indians in 1691. [Noyes, et al. Gen. Dict]

When his estate reached Probate Court in October 1691, his administratrix was his widow Rachel, and bondsmen were his brother Nathaniel Preble and a Samuel Bragdon. Rachel made a second appearance in 1714 in York County Probate to claim from the estate the costs of raising the children. For bringing up Rachel (3) (b. 7 Feb 1687/8), £31; for Stephen (3) b. 15 Jan 1692/3, £49 for 7 years.

I agree to the merge as long as the information from Mayne 275 remains, including parents and spouse.

This can all be done with cleanup of merge.
