Biography

John Buchanan Mayne was born in Mallow Fields, where his father was stationed, and became a law clerk, so education at Trinity College was the path. He married Margaret Strong, and had two sons and 6 daughters. He died in 1848, and Margaret around 1869. Her address (see attached pdf) was at that time 21 Blackhall Plce Dublin. The 'definitive', but incorrect, "Sedborough Mayne of Ireland" lists John and Charles as died as child. His father was an Army soldier, a Captain in the 9th Light Dragoons from 1795-1803. The Dragoons were a mounted regiment, and Captain John was a hard riding, tough man, listed in many actions, and was wounded in battle. His mother died in 1810, when John was 7.

Research Notes

John and Margaret married in the Church of Ireland, and many of their children were baptised to that church. Margaret Strong, though, was a girl raised in a Roman Catholic home by her parents. This fact would have created great drama in both families.

Two of their children, William and Mary, independently made lives for themselves in Australia.

The second name Buchanan became attached long after John's birth. Where did it originate?? Is it a maternal surname?? John's son William didn't seem to use the name Buchanan until the marriage of his daughter Florence in 1899.
