Biography

Robert Mays enlisted in the Civil War Oct., 8, 1862 under Major N. N. Cox, Co., C 10, D'Moss Calvary. He was a prisoner of war captured in 1863.

Robert's Dad, David, died before his Mother Sarah Mays. Sarah was still drawing a pension from Jesse Mays' service in The War of 1812. David is listed as her child, deceased and had one or two grown sons with one or both in the Confederate Army. Robert we know was a POW in the war and Thomas is the only other one old enough to have been a soldier.

Note from Demetrius Burnett, 8/23/2018:

Temperances' sister Susannah married Robert Mays. Two things I am looking for and cannot find. They had two children, David Deming Mays and Susannah. The next child is Wiley and I cannot confirm his Mother. David Deming Mays died in 1936 and is buried next to my parents. I cannot find an obituary or the exact date he died. thought you might run across these records.

No one even David D knew who his Mother was and my cousin and I found her last year in a land deed. I had been searching for over 30 years!!

FindaGrave has David Denim [sic] (Marvin) Mays, 1851-1936 and Malinda Catherine (Tinin) Mays (1869-1955) buried in Decatur Co., TN, with a child, James Robert Mays (1888-1936).

The 1860 census lists 29yo Robert Mays with wife(?) 20yo Nancy E. Mays, and children 9yo David D. Mays, 6yo Sarah E. Mays, and 4yo Wily M. Mays. This sounds like the same family. Did Susannah die before 1860? Which children was she the mother of?

In 1900, David D. Mays (b. July 1851 in TN) and wife Malinda C. lived in Perry Co., TN, along with children Jamed R (May 1888), Bertha L. (Feb. 1893), Chester A. (Dec. 1894), Albert T. (Feb. 1897), and Rufus C. (Jan. 1899).
