Jonathan Mazey (Meazey/Measy) 1760-1841
Jonathan Measy was baptised in Ystradowen, Glamorganshire on 28th December, 1760. His parents in the birth record are Jonathan Measy and Anne. [1]
It appears that Jonathan had three wives during his life. The first was Ann Thomas, also of Ystradowen. The Banns were read there in January 1779 and the pair married on the 6th of February, 1779.[2]
On March 3rd, 1784 a baby named Mary Masey was buried in Llantrisant. It is not clear if Mary was Jonathan's daughter, but the following month he was getting married again, so perhaps his first wife died giving birth to this baby, or if not, before that.
Jonathan Meazy's second wife was Catherine Thomas, perhaps Ann's sister. She was from Llanblethian, near Cowbridge (a few miles south of Ystradowen). The marriage took place in Llanblethian on the 17th of April, 1784 and the register shows that Jonathan was from Ystradowen.[3]
Jonathan and Catherine are named on the burial record of Catherine Measy, born in 1793 and buried on the 20th of April that same year, in Llancarfan (about four miles to the east of Llanblethian). So perhaps the family spent some time living in Llancarfan or visiting relatives? Catherine died 29 Sept 1794 and is buried at St John the Baptist Church in Llanblethian.[5]
Mary William (b.1772), daughter of Thomas and Jane William of Ystradowen became the third wife of Jonathan Measy of Llanblethian. They were married at Ystradowen on the 8th of July, 1797.[4] It seems that Jonathan and Mary spent a lot of their time in Llanblethian, or at least, that they used the church there to register the births of many of their children together. Jane Mazy was baptised there on the 6th of May 1798, but also, Jonathan's name appears on the Land Tax registers for Llanblethian in 1798 and 1799 as a tenant of John Miles and also of W. A Williams.
Elizabeth Meazy was baptised on the 9th of August, 1805 at the church in Ystradowen, but a note in the register states that she was born 18 days earlier in Llanblethian Parish. Jonathan and Mary were also noted as the parents for the following baptisms at Llanblethian: Edward Mazy (17th March, 1807), David Mazy (6th of July, 1809) and Evan Mazy (22nd November, 1814). Evan's entry is also interesting because it gives Jonathan's occupation as Farmer.
It looks as though Jonathan spent at least 20 to 30 years living in Llanblethian, probably farming land that he rented. But at some point Jonathan and Mary moved to the Llangynwyd area, north of Bridgend. Their son Edward declared Llangynwyd as his Parish at the time of his marriage in 1833 and both Jonathan and Mary are buried in the church of St. Cynwyd, Llangynwyd.
From the memorials of the churchyard at St. John the Baptist Church in Llanblethian recorded online at genuki.org, " Here lieth the body of Catherine the wife of Jonathon Masey and daughter of John Thomas of Wernfawr who died 29th September 1794 aged 32. Also Meazey daughter of the above Jonathon and Catherine Meazey died November 9th 1818 aged 26. Also Richard and Catherine Meazey children of William son of John and Catherine Measey by Jane his wife of Penlline died May 4th 1823. Richard aged 2 and Cartherine aged 11 years."[5]
Jonathan's GRO Death Certificate reads: 486 / Thirteenth of May, 1841. At Maesteg Cwmdu / Jonathan Maezey / Male / 81 Years. / Labourer / Old Age. / R. B. Thomas, Surgeon. In attendance. Bronygarn. / Eighteenth of May, 1841. / William Prees, Registrar
Jonathan was buried on the 15th of May, 1841, just before the Census was taken. On that Census his wife's address is given as Maesteg in the hamlet of Cwmdu, in the Parish of Llangynwyd. Also living with Mary is a daughter Anne, whose age is given as 24. Unfortunately the 1841 Census merely states that Anne was born in Glamorgan. Later Censuses might reveal whether the family were still living in Llanblethian in 1817. Mary died just two years later and by that time she was living at the Cambrian Works, Maesteg, Cwmdu.
