Mary McAllister was born in Eardley Township in 1847. She was the daughter of Thomas McAllister and Rebecca McMillan. She married Nathan Merrifield. She passed away in Port Arthur in 1939.
Resident of Port Arthur for thirty-seven years and known to many of the city's underprivileged through her charity, Mrs. Mary MacAllister Merrifield, 91, died at 3:30 Sunday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. William Opie, 324 North Algoma Street, with whom she lived. She was the widow of Nathan Joseph Merrifield, who died here in 1928. Mrs. Merrifield was born in Eardley, Que. Surviving are two sons, Harry of Hudson, and Philemon of Richmond, Ont. and four daughters, Matilda, Mrs. Opie; Norah, Mrs. James Virtue, Hamilton; Emma, Mrs. E.P. Fraser, Long Island, N.Y., and Laura, Mrs. L. McMillan, The Pas, Man. Two daughters and four sons predeceased her. Also surviving are 35 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon from the chapel at 299 Arthur Street to Riverside Cemetery for burial in the family plot. Rev William Holmes of Knox United Church will officiate.[1]
