Biography

Elizabeth McAteer was born 4 November 1793 in Laurens County, South Carolina, USA. Her parents were Hugh McAteer and his wife, Margaret Isabella (Law) McAteer. Another spelling for her maiden name was "McTyre" but McAteer seems prevalent. The McAteer family was quite large in 19th Century South Carolina.

Elizabeth McAteer married Jesse Prather, b: ca. 1791 in Laurens Co., South Carolina, around 1810 when she was 17 years old and he was 19 or 20 years old. The couple lived in Laurens County, South Carolina, and had the following 6 children:

  1. Thomas J. PRATHER, b: ca. Dec. 1810 in Laurens, South Carolina
  2. Polly PRATHER b: May 1811 in Laurens, South Carolina
  3. Verlinda Isabella PRATHER b: 30 Nov 1813 in Laurens, S.C.
  4. Harriet PRATHER b: 19 Oct 1815 in Laurens, S.C.
  5. Margaret Jane PRATHER b: 16 Dec 1819 in Laurens, S.C.
  6. Elizabeth Martha PRATHER b: 18 Nov 1821 in Laurens, S.C.

Jesse Prather passed away in Laurens County, South Carolina, in 1823. He was only 32 years old and left a young widow with 6 small children to raise. Elizabeth (McAteer) Prather rose to the occasion and on the 1850 Census, Elizabeth Prather (mis-spelled in the transcription as Prothers) was Head of a farm Household in Laurens County that included herself, 4 grown daughters and a 14-year-old grand-daughter, Elizabeth Duncan, whose father, James Duncan, had died in 1836 at 32 years old.[1]

In the early 1850s, one of Elizabeth's grand-daughters, Martha E. Duncan, married Robert Benjamin Stewart, b: 4 Feb 1834 in Laurens County, South Carolina. They moved west to Tippah County, Mississippi, before 1855. Sometime between then and 1860, Martha's mother, Isabella (Prather) Duncan, at least 2 of her aunts (Harriet & Margaret Jane Prather) and their mother, Elizabeth (McAteer) Prather, joined them.

Elizabeth (McAteer) Prather died in Tippah County, Mississippi, USA, on January 29, 1869. She was buried at the Pisgah Cemetery, Faulkner, Tippah County, Mississippi, USA. Her daughters, Harriet Prather and Margaret Jane Prather, both single when they passed away, are also buried there as is her widowed daughter, Isabella (Prather) Duncan. [2] [3]
