Biography

Ireland Native
Hugh McAuley was born in Ireland.

Hugh Oliver McAuley or MacAuley was born on May 10, 1885, son of Charles McAuley and Ellen Quinn in Caherty, Ballyclug, County Antrim, Ireland.[1] He was baptised on May 14, 1885, and his sponsors were Henry McGarry & Mary McGarry. He was baptised in Ballymena, County Antrim, Ireland.

In 1901, he is found on the 1901 Ireland Census in Caherty, Ballyclug, County Antrim, Ireland, living with parents and siblings.[2]

Hugh immigrated to the United States in 1904, landing in New York City on September 14, 1904, aboard the "Arabic."[3] He finalized his naturalization process in 1912, listing Kathleen McLaughlin of Moville, Ireland, as his wife and a son named Charles MacAuley who was born August 26, 1912, in New York City. At the time of his filing, Hugh and his family were living in Pennsylvania.

It seems that Hugh must have returned to Antrim about 1911, as the parish records for his baptism are amended to show his marriage to Helena McLaughlin of Moville in 1911.[4] She is variously found to be named Lena, Catherine, Kathleen, and Helena, but always McLaughlin.

His naturalization papers show he was back in the USA by 1912, when his son, Charles, was born.

His World War I draft registration places him in Grundy, Illinois in 1917-1918, and lists his date of birth on May 10, 1884. His wife is listed as Catherine. In 1920, Hugh and wife Kathlene, Kathleen, Catherine are living in Chicago with two children.[5]

in 1930, Hugh and Kathleen are living with son Charles and daughter Eileen in Chicago, Illinois, where Hugh works as a "horse groomer".

In 1940, Hugh and Kathleen are still in Chicago with their children, Charles and Eileen.
