In 1851, aged 14, Marion was working as a servant and residing with the Bradford family at Inverness. Her surname was recorded "McBean".
Marion arrived in Australia aged 16 aboard the vessel "Georgiana' She is listed on the passenger manifest as a domestic servant, and stated that she was coming to Australia to join her brother in Geelong.
Marion married Edward Smith in 1853 in Ashby, Geelong, Victoria. Their children were:
Sarah died on 17 October 1905 in Ballarat East, Victoria.
No sources provided for children Archibald and Esther named in profile. More research needed.
A copy of her 1853 marriage certificate states that her parents are Donald McBean and Flora McLeod, and that she was born in Glasgow and her father was a labourer. Marion signed with her 'mark' and was illiterate. Edward signed his own name and stated his birthplace as Birmingham and profession a "bricklayer'. his parents were recorded Thomas Smith (a mason) and Elizabeth Thomson?. She was aged 21 and he was aged 26.
Problems: 1) Marriage that is listed is for a Marion McBean??? in Australia?? Where is the proof that the family moved to Australia from Scotland?
2nd and most important the death cert listed has the wrong parents, BOTH??????????????
Answers to questions: there is information on Ancsetry that indicates that her fathers name was Donald Kenneth McBean/McBain and her mother was Flora. History shows that people changed their names or used different names - she might noth ave liked the name Marion and might have adopted a middle name as her first name, or it may be a name that the family gave to her out of respect to a deceased family member. Its not unusual. Other factors - the BDM transcriptions on death indexes are sometimes wrong - becuase the informants don't' know the details (particularly if the persons spouse has predeceased them), and because the chidlren didn't physically meet some of their grandparents. Having gone through the BDM I can't see another potential death for Sara/Marion and the family trees on Ancestry might have different parents listed (and the birth not sourced), but they consistently have her deceased as 1905 (family knowledge?). The marriage certificate links Sarah/Marion to Donald and Flora.
Unable to find a birth source- or lock down the birth date and this might be because Marion was illiterate.
thought bubble: Birth date confusion might be because IF Marion who married in 1853 is the one and the same (and appears to be). she would have been 18 at the time of her marriage. This means she would need to have had a guardian and someone to give permission for her marriage as she is under the age of 21. She may have lied about her age so the marriage could proceed (in the absence of a guardian and IF she is the same Marion that was working and residing with the bradford family -she may have been orphaned and not had a guardian?
