Charles McBride ,only son and eldest child of Samuel and Elizabeth (Howell)McBride, was born in Virginia between May and November of 1793. It is probable that Charles was born in Henry County,Virginia, adjoining Rockingham County,North Carolina, the residence of his parents' families in 1790.The censuses of 1850 and 1860 indicate Virginia as his birthplace. The year of his birth-1793-was so given by him in two separate depositions. On September 28,1814,while a resident of Williamson Co. Charles enlisted at Versailles (then Williamson, now Rutherford Co.) in Captain William Tate's Company of the 2nd (Williamson's) Regiment of mounted Gunmen. He served in the War of 1812 for a period of seven months and was honorably discharged at Nashville on April 27,1815.
