Leburn Ray "Red" McCaleb was born on 24 Jan 1918 in Brown, Fayette County, Alabama, United States. His parents were Felix Andrew McCaleb Sr. (1888 - 1973) and Johnnie Lee (Sheffield) McCaleb (1899 - 1984).

Red was helping his father on the farm and going to school in 1930. The family had grown, and one of his grandmother's brothers was also living with them.[2]

On 27 August 1941 Red enlisted in the United States Army. At the time of his enlistment, he was working for the Eldridge Coal Company, located in Eldridge, Fayette County, Alabama. He served in the European Theater and was honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sargent on 29 November 1948. Upon his return home, he went back to work for the coal company and also spent a lot of time working on his father's farm.[4]
Red married Lillian Bishop (1919 - 1971) in Dallas County, Alabama on 10 March 1943.[5] They had one son (living).
In the 1950 census Ray (age 32), McH Operator, was the married head of household in Rock Island, Rock Island, Illinois, United States.[6]

Lillian passed away on 12 Feb 1971. She was laid to rest in West Alabama Memorial Gardesn, Gu-Win, Marion County, Alabama.[7]
Years after Lillian passed away, Red married Ava Dean Whitehead. They moved to the family farm some time after Red's father, Felix, passed away.
Red died on 12 Sep 1992 in Winfield, Marion County, Alabama aged 74.[8] He was laid to rest beside his first wife, Lillian, in West Alabama Memorial Gardens, Gu-win, Marion County, Alabama.[9]
