Notice

Inverell Times (NSW : 1899 - 1954), Wednesday 21 May 1930. [2] PLANE CRASHES At "Craddock" Graman Struck Cow Whilst Taking-off MENZIES SUSTAINS INTERNAL INJURIES Whilst taking off in a locality known as Beasley's paddock, near "Craddock" Graman, yesterday afternoon, a moth 'plane, piloted by Mr. Creighton-Smith and having as passenger a Mr. Menzies, a well-known pilot, struck a cow and the force of the impact caused the machine to heel over and crash. The plane, which is the property of Mr. D. H, Jolly, of Brisbane, an insurance agent, was completely wrecked, the engine being the only portion left undamaged. Mr. Menzies sustained internal injuries and was admitted to "Craignish" private hospital last night. Whilst Mr. Creighton-Smith received minor cuts and, abrasions to the face. It is proposed to convey Mr. Menzies to Sydney in the "Canberra" to-morrow. When news came through to town that Mr. Menzies had crashed, Mr. Reg. Annabel, who was in Inverell en route to Sydney from Moree, immediately "tuned up" the "Miss Australia" and left for Graman. Owing to the early approach of nightfall, it was considered inadvisable to return to Inverell, as it was then dusk, and landing on the Inverell aerodrome by means of oil flares with an injured passenger, would be no mean feat, even to an experienced airman, and might have proved disastrous. Mr. Menzies was, therefore, conveyed to "Graignish" in the ambulance, which lost no time in making the trip. It appears that the owner of the 'plane (Mr. Jolly.) was transacting some business at "Craddock," and Mr. Creighton-Smith, who is a keen aviation, enthusiast, suggested that he (Mr. Creighton-Smith) should pilot the machine in company with Mr. Menzies, whilst the owner returned to Inverell in his (Mr. Creighton-Smith's) car. This was agreed upon, with the unfortunate results stated. Mr. Annabel returned in his plane from Graman this morning, and accompanied by Mr. Bardsley and Mr. Stocks in the "MM" left for Moree to secure. "The Miss Cronulla." They intend returning to Inverell this afternoon.
