Kenneth was born on 11 July 1891 in the Cowichan Valley, British Columbia,[1] the son of Arthur Campbell Oldham McCallum and Caroline Kinghurst Hawthornthwaite.[2] In 1901, their family was living in Victoria, British Columbia.[3] In 1911, Kenneth was living with his widowed mother and siblings in Nanaimo, British Columbia.[4]
He served in the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF), 1st Depot Battery and 1st Brigade, Canadian Field Artillery, during the First World War; he enlisted in 22 Sep 1914 and was discharged 11 Apr 1915 in order to accept a commission with 4th Battalion Sutherland Highlanders.[5]
He served as an Acting Sergeant, Company WO 329 and was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal.[6] He served as a 2nd Lieutenant, 4th Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders.[1][7]
