Lydia A. McCann was the wife of John H. Bishop, and mother of his children. Two items from her possessions are still in the family: - a "flow blue" gravy boat, Scinde pattern, Alcock pottery;[1] and a bisque ceramic cabbage with three rabbits in sculpture on the lid. Both are said by family tradition to have been brought by Lydia's mother from England.
When was Lydia born?
Lydia was born between 1822 and 1827 according to various census data. The 1900 Federal Census specifically says Jan 1825, and her death certificate at the end of 1900 says she was 76 (b. 1824). Her gravestone says 1824, but was erected afterwards using available data (probably the death record). If Lydia was born Jan 1825, she would have been age 75 and 10 months at death. Did someone round up her age?
Where was Lydia born?
Lydia's death record says she was born in North Hector, Schuyler County, New York. State censuses in the years 1855, 1865 and 1875 all say she was born in Seneca County, New York.
What was her surname?
Verbal tradition gave her the surname McCann, which has been confirmed by the death registers/certificates for some of her children.[2]
Who were Lydia's parents?
No records have been located naming Lydia's parents. She had a sister Julia, living with her and John H in the 1850 US Federal Census. Extensive analysis of early census data, 1810-1840, strongly suggest she was the daughter of John and Lydia McCann who lived in Seneca and Yates counties.
This John was born roughly in 1780, probably in Ireland; died between 1830-1835 probably in Benton, Yates County, New York
Lydia born in England 1780-1784, died between 1840 and 1850. Daniel Taylor (wife Abigail) left a will naming his daughter Lydia McCann. There were some other McCanns roughly the same age as Lydia in the vicinity who are probably her siblings: John McCann Jr, Lewis McCann, and Isaac McCann, besides her sister Julia.
John H Bishop and Lydia McCann were married about 1845, based on the birth of their oldest son Robert, born in 1847.[3]
They attended Bluff Point Methodist Church in the village of Kinney's Corners, where they lived.
Lydia is buried at Lakeview Cemetery in Penn Yan, New York, where a group monument has been erected on the Bishop plot, that was owned by their son Robert C. Bishop.[4]

Research Notes
The search for enough pieces of evidence to prove her parentage continues. Speculatively they are John McCann[21] and Lydia Taylor. Lydia Taylor was called Lydia McCann in her father's will.[22]
