Biography
John is probably the son of Moses McCarley who settled at William Penn's “Manor of Masque,” on Marsh Creek in what is now Cumberland Township, Adams County. Moses McCarley's claim is dated April, 1739. [1] He and 140 other families arrived from North Ireland under the leadership of Hance Hamilton and landed in New Castle, Delaware on 24 Aug 1729. [2] In April of 1739, Moses is listed as a resident of Marsh Creek who had made improvements upon his land[3]
John arrived in Racoon Township, Gallia, Ohio between 1804-1806 making him one of the first settlers in the township. [4] His wife was Martha Carr.
