We're very active on our social sites and we have an excellent blog where you'll find our monthly newsletter as well as tips, interviews with our members and guest posts from others in the genealogy community.
As always, I'm here to help if you have any questions!
Thanks for the note! The Catherine Simonton you entered was a duplicate of another profile on Wikitree. I proposed a merge for those 2 profiles.
We were all novices at some point. Where do you interests lie? What do you know already? There is a great Genealogy 101 references list here: http://www.cyndislist.com/beginners/
. WikiTree is a collaborative site for people of all experience levels. Did you volunteer because you want to start adding your family and contribute to our shared tree?
If you are adding any DNA tests to profiles on WikiTree, please be sure to add the tests to the actual test participant's profile, and that the Privacy is set to show the participant's Family Tree tab.
Hi again Brendan, You are now a member of the WikiTree Community - We are building One Collaborative Tree, with just one profile per person, so it is important to ensure no duplicates are entered as you add Profiles to WikiTree.
If you have pre-1700's ancestors to add, please read our Pre-1700 profiles info. Please, be sure to include a list of the sources used, on each profile you add.
If you need any help getting started check out the Help Index or the G2G forum - Good luck growing your branches, Patt
I'm the family genealogist for my family and am currently performing DNA analysis through familytreedna.com to trace the McCarthy surname as far baxk as possible.
I see you have uploaded your DNA for comparison. We have a DNA Project where a lot of new things are happening!
If you are interested and would like to check it out, Click HERE or go to the menu at the top right of your profile page, select FIND / PROJECTS, and select the link for the DNA project. It has information you might be interested in. Feel free to contact any of the members if you would like additional details.
Hi Brendan, I noticed you uploaded a GEDCOM. Here's a link to great info about adding a GEDCOM to WikiTree that you might find helpful. Also, 'Before you import a GEDCOM' Because WikiTree has only one profile for each person, the further back you go in your ancestry, the more likely cousins will find you and help out.
Sources are very important for genealogy - be sure to include the sources used, on each profile you add.
It is a good idea to enter a few of your ancestors manually, to get used to how WikiTree works. Then, you could upload a small portion of your tree, with a gedcom, to see how that works. There is usually editing needed after a Gedcom import, so fewer profiles makes the task easier.
Hello & Welcome, to WikiTree! We're growing a FREE worldwide family tree, striving for ONE collaborative profile per person.
"Sources are critically important for genealogy. Some even say that genealogy without sources is mythology. Even if you're just a casual family historian recording modern family history, you will be helping future genealogists by listing where the information you've added came from."
Feel free to ask questions at our G2G forum. Also, our help pages menu, top right, has some very useful information.
Our Honor Code is why our community is such a friendly place to grow your family tree, so please take some time to read it. Want to join us? Check the volunteer box and leave a brief comment about your genealogical journey. Happy researching - Patt
