Biography

Joseph McCarthy is believed to be the son of Mary Downey-905, http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Downey-905

He is believed to have been the only child of Mary Downey and Eugene McCarthy.

Census reports give different locations regarding where he was born. The 1940 census gives his birth location as NJ, whereas his marriage document for his marriage to his wife Florence gives the location as LIttle Falls, NY. Considering that his supposed mother lived in Little Falls, NJ during the 1900 census, there is room for contention here.

By 1920, Joseph and his mother "Mary Boles", were living in NYC with the family of William Downey, the brother of Mary Boles. The household consisted of William and wife Margaret, the couple's children Daniel, William, John, Francis, Martha and Margaret, (William's? Margaret's?) uncle Patrick Flannigan, Joseph's mother Mary Boles and Joseph himself.

In 1928, Joseph married his wife Florence Driscoll. She was the daughter of Michael Driscoll and Bridget Nagle. They had two daughters both of whom are deceased.

Joe is believed to have owned a gas station in either NJ or NY or may have worked at one. In the 1940 NY census he was a " chauffeur" for a trucking company.

Joseph McCarthy died in either NJ or NY some time after 1965 but his exact date of death is not known.
