Biography

Margaret was born in 1873. She passed away in 1971.

Margaret was the daughter of Henry McCarthy and Thomasina or Thomazenia Patterson.

Mrs Margaret Head and her brother, Mr Archibald McCarthy, were wearing birthday smiles wher the Express photographer called at Mrs Head's home in Baynes St., Terang.

Mrs Head was celebrating her 90th birthday and Mr McCarthy, of Frankston, was celebrating his 77th. Their birthdays on the same day.

She was the second daughter of the late Harry and Tomasina McCarthy and as a baby travelled with her parents to Mortno Plains where her parents became pioneers of the Birchip district.

In December 1902 she came top Terang to work for the late Mr and Mrs Harry Coy.

Mr Coy was a partner in Coy Bros. Store (now the Co-op. Store).

In 1917 she married Mr Frederick Head who died in 1951.

For the past 12 moths Mrs Head has been in ill-health and spends most of her time in bed.

The birthday cake with 90 candles was cut by Mr McCarthy.

PARENTS WERE BIRCHIP DISTRICT PIONEERS
Mrs Margaret Janet Head who died at he home last Sunday morning, was born at Weering, on December 14, 1879.

Mrs Head was the second daughter of the late Henry and Tomasina McCarthy and as a baby travelled with her parents to Morton Plains where her parents became pioneers of the Birchip district.

In December 1902 she came to Terang and in 1917 she married Mr Frederich James Head, who predeceased her in 1951.

All he life Mrs Head was associated with the Methodist church.

For many years she was a teacher as the Terang Methodist Sunday School, Congregational representative on the Quarterly meeting and and active member of the Ladies Guild.

Mrs Head was also an excellent cook and won many prizes at various shows.

Fort several years she had been in ill-health and spent most of her time in bed.

Mrs Head is survived by two daughters, Joan (Terang), Lynette (Sandringham), and a son, John (Terang). She is also survived by a sister (Mrs E.J.Smith, Birchip) and a brother (Mr A.T.McCarthy, Frankston).

She was buried at the Terang cemetary on Monday, following services at the house and graveside, conducted by Rev. M.J.Both, noorat.

Coffin-bearers were Messrs Laurie Smith and John Sloan (nephews), Vin Ayres and Douglas Miller.

Among the beautioful floral tributes were those sent by the Terang and Mortlake Methodict Circuit, Terang Methodist Church members, Terang Methodist Ladies' Guild, management and staff of Dunlopillo, Melbourne, and Dunlopillo Social Club.

Funeral arrangements were made by Macqueen's Funeral Services.
