Biography

Margaret, d/o Lawrence McCarthy, Farmer and Fisherman of Slievmore, Sherkin, and Mary Brien, dob 6 April 1890, registered in Skibbereen on 13 May 1890. (bottom of page)^[1]

Maggie was 11 at the 1901 census, a visitor in the household of her O Brien grandfather.

Marriage Record. 13th November 1924: Florence Driscoll, aged 22, Farmer from Baltimore, Father Denis Driscoll, farmer and Margaret McCarthy, aged 34 from Sherkin Island, father Florence McCarthy, Farmer. They were wed on the island by Father John Fehily.^[2]

Research Notes

She married a man called Florence Driscoll from Baltimore and had four children; Hannah, Philomena, Mary and Dennis. Hannah and Philomena left Cork for Ilford in Essex and Norfolk, according to Dennis' recollections. Mary passed away in 2010. Dennis is of course, 'Dee Dee', bonesetter, mackerel smoker and salmon rustler supreme

John Murphy informed me that DD. Driscoll, the bonesetter in Baltimore, Co. Cork, who practiced in the latter half of the twentieth century, inherited his gift from his mother, who was an O’Brien (interview with John Murphy, 2 November 2012; JM 2012 henceforth)

and

The O’Briens in West Cork were noted for their bone-setting gift, but it is no longer practiced by any member of the family
