Biography
Ellen was born in 1860, the daughter of Charles McCarthy and Mary Curtis.[1]. She was born 2 days after the July 18, 1860 census.
The 1870 census lists Ellen, 10, with her parents Mary and Charles and siblings Dennis, 20, Mary, 16, James, 12, plus Ellen, 10, and Katie, 7. All the children except Dennis were born in Connecticut.. Four Irish railroad laborers (like Charles) are boarding at their house. [2]
The 1880 census shows Ellen, 19, living in New Haven with her widowed mother Mary, brothers Dennis, 29, James, 21, and sister Katie, 17. Ellen's sister Mary Doody and her husband John and daughter Mary, 2, are also living with the family, as are five boarders from Ireland. [3]
The 1900 census shows Ellen,39, and husband James, 45, with their children Joseph, 15, Mary, 13, Charles, 11, Frank, 10, and Grace, 8. James died in 1900 after the census. [4]
The 1910 census shows Ellen, widowed, living with sons Charles and Frank, and daughters Mary and Grace.[5]
In 1913 Ellen traveled to Europe with her daughters Mary, then 27, and Grace, 21, arriving home in September from Naples on the Saxonia.They were living at 268 Dwight St. in New Haven at that time.[6]
In 1920 Ellen, 59, is living with her sons Charles,31, and Frank, 30, on 268 Dwight St. in New Haven. [7]
In 1922 Ellen traveled to Europe with her sons Charles,33, and Francis, 32.[1]
In 1926 Ellen traveled to Europe with her niece Kathryn Scannell, who would later marry Ellen's son Charles. They returned September 12 on the S.S. Celtic.[8]
In 1930 Ellen, 69, is living with son Charles, 41, on 29 Whalley Ave. in New Haven. Son Francis has moved to Stamford.[9]
In 1940 Ellen, 79, is living with son Charles, 51, on 57 Whalley Ave. in New Haven.[10]
She passed away Dec. 29, 1943 in New Haven. [11]
