The 1880 US census report for Lewiston, Maine lists residents John McCarthy (39), born in Ireland, his wife Catherine (31), born in Ireland, daughter Ellen (7), born in Maine, and son Patrick E (1), born in Maine. John is employed as a laborer.
The 1900 US census for Lewiston, Maine lists the residents of a section of the city known as Burnt Patch Woods, Ward 7 as John McCarty [sic] (60), born in Ireland, a watchman at a cotton mill, his wife Katherine A (52), also born in Ireland. They own their home free from mortgage. John immigrated to the United States in 1867 and is a naturalized citizen and resident for 33 years. Katherine immigrated in 1848 and has been a resident for 52 years. Residing with them are their children, all born in Maine, Edward P (21), a student, John J (20) an apprentice stone cutter, Nellie F (28), a clerk at a bleachery, Gertrude F (18), a student, and Charles T (14), also a student. A nephew of John's, Thomas McCarthy [sic] (24), resides with the family. He was born in Ireland, immigrated in 1896 and is naturalized, living here for 4 years. He is employed as a conductor for the electric railroad.
He passed away in 1927 and is buried at the Mount Hope Cemetery, Lewiston, Maine.
