Biography

WILBERT ANDREW MCCARTNEY
WILBERT ANDREW MCCARTNEY was born on 25 November 1899, at St. Vincent Township, Grey County, Ontario, Canada. He was the son of MARIA ELIZABETH DALEY and WILLIAM CALVIN MCCARTNEY.
On December 8, 1915, eighteen-year-old Wilbert Enlisted with the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Forces for active duty in the WWI theater stationed in France. He was assigned to First Canadian Motor Machine Gun Brigade with the rank of Private. He was killed while on active duty in France on 27 September 1918.
"He was instantly killed on the morning of September 27, 1918, while his battery was firing a barrage, his gun receiving a direct hit from hostile artillery."
Canada, War Graves Registers (Circumstances of Casualty), 1914-1948
His burial is commemorated at the Vimy, Departement du Pas-de-Calais, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France -- * A structure erected in honor of someone whose remains lie elsewhere. PLOT Final resting place unknown. Name listed on the Vimy Memorial.
NOTE Although his age listed on his Canada, World War I CEF Personnel Files, 1914-1918--Attestation paperwork shows him to be eighteen-years-old, either that cannot be correct or his Find A Grave memorial page is incorrect because it shows age at the time of death as 18. Since he would have been only 15 years old at the time of his enlistment it seems far more probable that the Find A Grave record has misread the his age at death. I could not find a death age for Wilbert among his military records.
