Biography

Birth

Nancy MCCartney was born 25 Aug. 1835[1] to John Young McCartney and Sarah (Coleman) McCartney in Armstrong Township, Indiana county, Pennsylvania.[2][3] According to an obituary appearing on 20 Nov 1919 in a local newspaper[4][5] she was born 25 Aug 1835 in the town of Clarksburg of Indiana county.

Marriage and children

Nancy married John Lowry in 1855[6][7]

A record from the census of 1 June 1880 shows that the couple had at least 6 surviving children:[8]

  1. Horace, b. about 1856
  2. Sarah S., b. about 1858
  3. Arabella, b. about 1862, bp. 1 Sep 1862[9]
  4. William P., b. 6 Jul 1868
  5. Albert Kerr, bp. 31 Jan 1875[10]
  6. Laura, b. about 1877

In addition to these 6, there is a birth record for a 7th child, Lincoln Lowry, on 3 July 1865.[11] Lincoln was not listed as a member of the family during the censuses of 1870[12] or 1880. He may have died before 1870.

A biography of John Lowry included in a 1983 history of Indiana county[13] lists the 6 children appearing on the 1880 census record plus Howard J. Lowry, b. 24 June 1880 (3 weeks after the family were enumerated for the 1880 census).

A record from the 1900 census shows that "Nancy Lowrey" was then a widow (John had died in 1886 when Nancy was 51), but still living with Albert and Laura.[14] The record indicates that Nancy had had a total of 8 children of whom 7 were still alive. This is consistent with the above listing of children.

Residence and John's occupation

Records for the family from the censuses of 1860, 1870 and 1880 and the 1865 birth record for Lincoln all show them to be living in Indiana town (or White township 2 miles away) of Indiana county, Pennsylvania. A sketch of their house (image attached to this profile) appears in an 1880 History of Indiana County, Pennsylvania.[15]

The 1860 census recorded John's occupation as "Student-at-law". By 1870 he was "Lawyer and prothonotary" (chief clerk in the Indiana county court system). He founded the Indiana Times newspaper in 1878 and functioned as its editor and publisher from 1878 until his death.[16] The 1880 census recorded his occupation as "Editor". He was elected to two terms of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from 1883 - 1884 and from 1885-1886. [17]

Death of John Lowry

John Lowry died in Indiana county on 23 April 1886.[18]

Death of Nancy

Nancy lived another 33 years, but stayed in the town of Indiana[19][20] where she died and was buried in 1919.[21][22]
