Jonas was born on 27 Oct 1765 in Smith Creek in the Shenandoah area of the Colony of Virginia. He was the son of Jared McCarty and Sally Fugate. On 29 Dec 1787, in Shenandoah, Virginia, he married Catherine Zirkle. By 1830 they had moved from Virginia to Ohio, settling in Gallia. It is here he passed away on 27 Oct 1849. He is buried at the McCarty Cemetery in Cheshire, Gallia, Ohio.
