Biography

Dennis was born perhaps around 1720, assuming he was in his 20s when he married Margaret Wood and about the same age as her. His origin and parents are unknown. A Dennis McMarry of Providence, Rhode Island married Susannah Perry of Rehoboth in the Province of Massachusetts Bay on 4 January 1719/20. It has been suggested that this surname was a mis-spelling of one of the variants of McCarty, in which case the father's name and the timing would be a good fit to be the parents of the present Dennis.

Dennis McCarte and Margaret Wood married after intentions posted at Bristol (now part of Rhode Island) on 28 December 1743.^[1] They recorded three children at Bristol:^[2]

• William b. 7 January 1745/6
• Anne (twin) b. 17 June 1752; d. 6 October 1790
• Elizabeth b. 17 June 1752; d. April 1762

The Bristol town records record that he died in 1760 while on board a man o' war. On 6 December 1762, Margaret MacKarty informed the Bristol town council that she "had been notified of the death of her late husband Dennis Mackarty, who had been absent for more than eight years. The same day, she was granted administration of the estate of her husband Dennis MacKarty, mariner, deceased at Bristol.^[3]
