Biography

John was born in 1837. He was the son of John McCauley and Mary Wells. In her book Phyllis writes "He volunteered for service during the Civil War. He was in Co B of the 40th Mississippi Infantry. He apparentliy did not like the war and went home. He avoided being taken prisoner by telling the brigade which came for him that he was saick and as he talked he slowly pulled up his pants legs to expose his skinny, bandy legs. One look at his legs convinced the soldiers that he was telling the truth, but Jerd was not ill. Another time his brother Joshua came to get him and take him back to the battleline. Jerd went with him until they got within hearing distance of the shooting and Jerd became more and more excited and his feet got hotter and hotter and he finally told Joshua that he had to cool his feet in the stream. After that he told Josh that he was not going to go any further. He and Sarah had 11 children, James Henry, Martha A. Mary J. John, George Alexander, Walter Griffin, Julia Elizabeth, Rufus Austin, Lucy Ann, Malinda Viola and J. J. This last entry in the Bible is in a different handwriting and noone in the family remembers this child but we decided that it was probably a stillborn son named for his father and was probably buried on the roadside. The date that was given was 15 April 1878. Sometime after 1875 Jerd, along with several other families, moved from Mississippi to Arkansas. " John passed away in 1908.
