“Henry McCauley (John McCauley’s father) owned a large area of land stretching from the village of Ballinalack toward the village of Street in County Westmeath, Ireland. He had a son Werner who erected a monument on his grave when he died in 1868. He had at least one daughter, and two other sons. They worked very hard cutting turf on their father's turbary and otherwise working the land. They were not first sons and knew they would never inherit. Their father worked them hard and gave them little reward. One time, after the fair had been held, they noticed where he hid the proceeds. They later removed what they thought should be their fair share and emigrated, one brother to America, John to Tarraville in Gippsland, Victoria where he had arrived by 1857.” (Edited slightly) [2]
“William (John McCauley’s son) was born in 1866 but not baptised there so it is thought that the family moved on at that time. No more is known of John McCauley. It is believed that his sister in Ireland wrote to ask him to come home after his father died in 1868, even sending money. But it is not known if he took this course.” [2]
