Biography

No birth/baptism record has been found for Bernard McCauley, supposedly born in the Parish of Carrickmacross, County Monaghan, Ireland in 1784. However, a typed record of his family's details as passengers on the ship "Susan" that departed from Londonderry, Ireland on 13 October 1838 for Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, has his age in that year as 49 and his birth date as 1 May that would be about 1789. On the official 'New South Wales, Australia, Assisted Immigrant Passenger Lists, 1828-1896' for March 1839 for the ship "Susan", Bernard McCawley is listed as 'Master-at-Arms' for 9 Ships Corporals - "Susan" at sea 10 November 1838. Signed by Charles Kennedy, Surgeon Superintendant, and again on the next page with Sydney 1st February 1839. Transcript arrival date is given as 10 March 1839.

Bernard Mccauley's death date is given as 21 March 1858 and birth date as 1784, with burial in the Wollongong Cemetery, Wollongong, Wollongong City, New South Wales, Australia. The year date and registration place, Wollongong are confirmed in the Australia, Death Index record.

Bernard is my Great Great Grandfather.... the Harp hotel is still trading that he started in 1839.... I have visited his and Cecilia grave in Wollongong Cemetery... also with them are there daughter Catherine who married Archibald Beatson and their sons and daughter Amelia who married David George Cochrane and Their daughter Edith Maude Cochrane .... David is not with them he is buried with his parents.... Archibald Beatson brought Allambie Terrace a grand house that still stands today Market St Wollongong all so one of their sons John Beatson was Lord Mayor of Wollongong NSW ... Regards Patricia
