OBITUARY. [4]
MRS. FRANCES MUDGE.
Shortly before six o'clock, on Friday night last, death removed one of the oldest links in the history of the western pioneers, in the person of Mrs Frances Mudge, who died at Dudley private hospital, aged 78 years, after two months of great suffering.
Operated on about a month ago for a serious internal complaint, deceased at first showed signs or recovery, but her heart was unable to stand the great strain, and she passed peacefully away as stated. Born in Sydmouth Valley, she was a daughter of
the late Mr. and Mrs. James McCauley, who had resided at that historic spot since their arrival from the North of Ireland, as children. Mrs. Mudge was married at the age of 28 years, and continued to reside with her husband at Sydmouth Valley, until in 1907 they
left for Woodstock. Here she was predeceased in 1909 by her life's companion, going thence to live with her daughter at Forest Reefs, and with whom she remained until the commencement of her illness, two months ago. A great supporter and member of the Methodist Church, she was always a regular attendant, and her work in this direction, over many years, will be well remembered. She was the possessor of a heart, kind
beyond description, and in her days of health and strength, spent much of her time in ministering to the needs of sick and distressed neighbors—in those days widely separated. She was beloved in every district she resided in, and much sympathy is extended to the bereaved relatives in their irreparable loss. The following children remain to mourn the loss of a devoted mother:—Mr. W. H. Mudge (Millthorpe), Mrs. Bates (Sydney), Mr. J. E. Mudge (Woodstock), Mrs. F. Cox (Sydney), Mrs. J. A. Innes (For-
est Reefs), Miss Laura Mudge (Forest Reefs). Mr. Thomas McCauley, aged 72, of Sydney, is a brother. The remains were placed in the Methodist Church, from which they were conveyed to Millthorpe, at 12.30 o'clock on Saturday morning. Following a short service at the Millthorpe church, at 3 o'clock that afternoon, the cortege left for the Methodist portion of the Millthorpe cemetery, where a large and representative gathering paid their last tributes to one who was loved so well. Rev. Wedge officiated at the graveside.
Is this the brother mentioned in her obit? Thomas, child of James Macauley & Margaret Macauley, was born in 1847 in New South Wales.[5] There is also a younger possibility with the same parents. Thomas (age 34), son of James McCauley & Margaret Sadler, married Louise Matthews on 28 June 1890 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.[6]
