Biography

Ellen McAulay was born to parents Daniel and Mary (Black) McAulay in 1844 in Niagara, Ontario. There is some discrepancy about the spelling of the last name. In some cases it is shown as McCauley and others as McAulay. The marriage documents and birth registrations of her children used the McCauley spelling. It is believed that McAulay is correct since her gravestone has that spelling and at one point her brother lived next door to her and he spelled it that way.

On July 11, 1874, Ellen married Richard Ellis in Ingersoll. ^[1] Together they had two sons: Daniel (1876) ^[2] and George Alexander (1877) ^[3] The 1881 census has the family living in Dereham, Oxford South, Ontario and Richard is shown as a farmer. The 1891 census shows the family living next door to Ellen's brother Neil McAuley. ^[4]

Richard died October 16, 1913. He is buried in the Ebeneezer/ Grove Cemetery. Ellen died November 9, 1923 ^[5] She is buried in Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Cemetery in Section B. ^[6]
