She was named Edwina after the family name Edward as both grandfathers were Edward as was her father. .
Edwina grew up in Lisburn Northern Ireland. After Primary and secondary schools she went to The Queens University of Belfast to study Medicine and graduated in 1968. She undertook her houseman's year at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast. As an undergraduate she joined the University Officers Training Corps where she Met Tom. They married On October 18th 1969.
Following her houseman's year she started to train in anesthetics staying in this field till the birth of her first son Charles. When Charles was about 4 months old Edwina began working as a General Practitioner Firstly part time but later full time. She remained in General Practice on moving to Erdingtom Birmingham in 1973 and when the family moved to Dundee she became a Principal in a practice in that City. In 1976 she undertook a course of study in Occupational Medicine and in November of that year she left General Practice and started working for the Health and Safety Executive as an Employment Medical Adviser based in Dundee. She was promoted to Senior Medical Adviser in 1983 and moved in May to work from the HSE office in Newcastle upon Tyne. She comanded staff in Newcastle Leeds and Sheffield remaining in that post till she retired in 2004.
Edwina's hobbies include decorating, dressmaking and swiming. When she was a GP she bred Persian Kittens but had to give this up when she accepted the 9 to 5 job with HSE as she could no longer be home in the middle of the day to wean kittens. She still has pets Jack a black Labrador and two Persian cats The black one is called Henriot and the cream one Jacquesson.
