Adam was born about 1773 Virginia, the sixth of sixteen children and the fifth of six sons of James (Sr.). James married at least two times, possibly three and Adam was the son of the first wife, Sarah Patterson McChesney.

They had a daughter, Jane, the next year and a son two years later, but Nancy died, perhaps in childbirth and the son was either born dead or died soon after birth.
