Biography

Robert McChesney[1] was born c1750 in County Armagh, Northern Ireland, [2] the fourth of five children and the third of four sons of unknown parents.
About 1770 Robert settled on land about six miles above Middlebrook, in Augusta County, Virginia.[3]
Little is known about his life in Virginia though we do know that on 5 February 1780 "Robert McChesney and Jane, his wife sued one Thomas Hines for slander:
Type: Court case
Date: 05 Feb 1780
Place: , AUGUSTA, VA:
Note: "Robert McChesney and Jane, his wife, vs. Thomas Hines.--Slander. A Richard Jones deposed on 26th August, 1780 that "Deponent was indebted last fall to Ro. McChesney, but went to Carolina before it was paid, at which place Andrew Hays produced his note to Ro. McChesney."[4]
From 13 Mar-02 Apr 1793 he and one James Buchanan and one James Tedford were involved in the Inventory & appraisment of the Estate of Wm Berry deceased.[5][6]
Robert married one Jane Hall in Ireland before coming to the colonies and she bore him six known children,[7][8] including
  1. Jane McChesney
  2. John McChesney
  3. Three Other Children McChesney
  4. William McChesney
He died on 21 Mar 1813.[9]

Robert McChesney
Birth: 1750; Death: Mar. 21, 1813.
Robert McChesney married Jane Hall "before they left Ireland." The Halls were believed born in County Armagh and came over in the slow boat together, likely from the same area and settled in both Rockbridge and Augusta Counties, VA. Robert settled near Greenville, Augusta Co. Later generations believed they arrived with their weight in linen, making it possible to buy land early on.
They had five known McChesney children between 1770 and 1793: William, Mary (Mrs. Jas B McClung), John, Robert, Jr. and Jane (Mrs. Nathan McClure). They are all buried in Virginia.
I have yet to find the name of Robert's parents but it is believed that his siblings were: Martha, JAMES, Hugh and Susanna McChesney Hall. These five siblings are believed to have crossed the Atlantic from Northern Ireland together, about 1770 and come to Augusta and Rockbridge Counties, Virginia to settle.
In 1780, a Robt. "McChesnay" contributed 72 pounds of flour, £36. Augusta County, VA Revolutionary Publick Claims, procured by Jos Bell, Commissioner. I note the Library of VA lists it has his signature related to this transaction, in their "System Number 001076080 and 001076079 - List # 3, p 7." (This makes him D.A.R. eligible, as he contributed to the cause.)
In the 12 Sep 1936 WPA report #ROC302 of James W. McClung, a Robert McChesney built a circa 1780, 2 story brick home, later owned by J. Samuel Gibson. It was located in current Rockbridge Baths, VA. There is a side view photo of it, with chimneys on either end. 3-11. Time wise, this Robert appears to be the best candidate for the home builder.
The same surname is known in Northern Ireland today. On a sunny day in Northern Ireland, you can clearly see SW Scotland from County Antrim. BEAUTIFUL.
Leander J. McCormick's Family Record and Biography, 1896, p 412, says Robert's son John McChesney, was born 1798 at his Augusta Co., VA home called Greenwood, the "McChesney home." Plus John's parents were members of Old Providence Church.
His siblings on Findagrave.com: James McChesney, Susanna McChesney Hall.
Family links: Spouse: Hall McChesney (1749 - 1810); Children: William McChesney (1770 - 1860), Mary McChesney McClung (1778 - 1850), Robert McChesney (1785 - 1863), John McChesney (1786 - 1877), Jane Hall McChesney McClure (1793 - 1845),
Burial: Old Providence ARP Church Cemetery, Spottswood, Augusta County, Virginia, USA.[10]

Note

"I found 2 homes that Robert McChesney built, in the report of James W. McClung. One is the Old 2 story home of J. Samuel Gibson, surveyed 12 Sep 1936, in Rockbridge Baths, Virginia."[11]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Robert by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Robert:
