Biography

George A. McCleary[1] was born 4 Feb 1798 in Frederick County, Maryland, the son of William McCleary and Margaret Slagel. In 1814, his family moved to Coshocton County, Ohio, where George was to live out the rest of his life. On 30 Nov 1820, at age twenty-two, he married Sarah Tanner. Together, they had nine children.[2]

  1. James T. McCleary (1822–1886)
  2. Charles Slagel McCleary (1825–1906)
  3. Seth McCleary (1827–1905)
  4. William McCleary (1830–1905)
  5. Margaret (McCleary) Roderick (1832– )
  6. John McCleary (1835–1869)
  7. Edna McCleary (1837–1848)
  8. Sarah Ann (McCleary) Cullison (1840–1916)
  9. Mary McCleary (1843- )

In 1834, George was elected representative of the district of Coshocton and Tuscarawas counties in the Ohio legislature.[3]

Research Notes

  1. What the "A" stands for is disputed. The creator of this profile gives it as "Acons"; it appears as "Akins" at Find a Grave. Neither form has been documented.
  2. A tenth child appears at FamilySearch, Jacob Adams, born about 1848. He is not included here, however, because he does not appear in the 1850 census. He appears only in the 1860 census, as "Jacob Adams", at 12 years old. "Adams" in this case has been interpreted as a middle name rather than a surname. In the following census, 1870, he reappears in a neighboring family as a laborer, at 22 years old; and in this case, the names are inverted, showing that "Adams" is in fact a surname. It is still to be determined whose child he is. Likely candidates would be William and Rebecca Adams, of neighboring Muskingum County, who had a son Jacob born 10 Aug 1847. Rebecca died in 1851, a week after giving birth to their second child, who also died a week later. William himself then died sixteen months later, leaving their son Jacob an orphan at age 5.
  3. Hill, 1881, p. 305 and 500. At that time, the representative served for a single year.
