Colonel John M. McClellan was born December 24, 1768, in Botetourt County, Virginia, a son of William McClellan and Barbara (Walker) McClellan. John was named for his paternal grandfather.
During the War of 1812, Captain McClellan commanded a garrison on the Clinch River from 1792-93; he is referenced as Col in a letter dated in 1812 from Washington. Later his name appears on a muster roll and pay rolls. [1]
On 13 May 1794, in Blount County, Tennessee, John married wife Mary Wallace, a daughter of William Wallace (1737- after 1799). Mary's father was a Justice of the Peace, in Sullivan county, North Carolina and DAR Ancestor #A120013. John's father, Captain William McClellan served as an officer in the Loundoun County, Virginia Militia, during the American Revolutionary War and is DAR Ancestor #A075059. There are numerous applications for membership in the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution for the descendants of John and Mary (Wallace) McClellan.
John died November 15, 1842, in Canehill, Washington county, Arkansas and is buried in the McClellan Cemetery, there. [2]
Some records indicate that John McClellan was born 24 September, 1768 at Sullivan County, Tennessee, but this same record indicates that he also served during the American Revolutionary War. Since he was too young to serve in the Revolution, this is probably a confusion with another John McClellan. [3]
