Rev. John McClintock was born 27 October 1814 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to John and Martha (McMackin, aka McMahon) McClintock, natives of Tyrone, Ireland.[1] His professional life as a professor of mathematics and classical language, anti-slavery activist and minister are well-documented, as internet searches will reveal. His biography and letters, compiled by his friend George Crooks with assistance from his son Emory, is available online.
John married Carolyn Augusta Wakeman, daughter of Jabez and Sarah (Betts) Wakeman, on 20 December 1836 in Trenton, New Jersey.[2]
Carolyn died 2 March 1850 in Jersey City.[3] In the 1850 census, John and his sister Martha and his two living children, John E. ("Emory") and Martha ("Augusta") McClintock, were in a household with his late wife's brother Edgar Wakeman in Trenton.[4]
On 9 October 1851, John married Catherine Wilkin (Stevenson) Emory, widow of John's friend Rev. Robert Emory, and daughter of George and Maria (Barker) Stevenson,[5] in Trenton.[6]
Rev. McClintock was invited to assume the pastorate of the American Chapel in Paris, of the American and Foreign Christian Union, and the family spent the first part of the 1860s there.[7]
In 1867, he became the first president of Drew Theological Seminary, later Drew University, in Madison, New Jersey.[8]
