Ellen McCloughlin (or "McClougher") was born in Rawalpindi, Punjab, British India on about 4 July 1860. She was baptised on 22 July 1860 in the same place.[1] She married John Jones in Cookstown, County Tyrone in 1880.[2][3]
In 1881 Ellen was living with her husband at 21 King Street in Dalton in Furness in 1881. His sister Amelia and her husband were also living at the same address while his parents lived at 15 King Street.[4] Ellen gave her age as 20 years and her place of birth as the "East Indies".
On 3 February 1886 William John Jones and Ellen Jones arrived in Brisbane, Queensland, having emigrated there from Lancashire. They arrived on board a ship called Cloncurry. Ellen gave her place of birth as Lancashire when the ship docked in Maryborough on 1 February and then as Cornwall when it arrived in Brisbane two days later.[5] The couple were living in Gympie when their first child, Annie, was born in December 1886.[3]
