Biography

Benjamin Franklin McClung was born the 8 Sep 1829 in Blount County, Alabama. He was the oldest known child of Richard McClung and Peggy Tidwell. But likely he had one or two older siblings. His parents were married in January of 1825 and Benjamin was born in September of 1829.

James Robert McClung, Benjamin's grandson, wrote in a letter dated January 17, 1955, that after Benjamin's mother died and the re-marriage of his father, that Ben left home and was employed on a farm by a local Methodist preacher by the name of Morris, who with his wife were greatly concerned about the salvation of the young man McClung. A few years later Benjamin married Elizabeth Tapp Barry whose mother was a Morris. The relationship of the farmer who Ben worked for and Elizabeth's mother is not known. In later years Benjamin McClung became a Methodist Minister. He established the first Methodist Church in Sentinel, Oklahoma.

Benjamin acquired 79.23 acres W NW of Section 7, Township 12 South, Range 2 East, the Huntsville base line out of the Huntsville, Alabama land office, Document Number 20862, 1858/03/01, Cash Entry Sale. He also acquired 79.23 acres that are identified as E NW, the rest of the description is the same, Document number 17147, same date.

There were several people by the name of McClung living in Blount County, Alabama in 1850. It is not known what type of relationship these people had with Richard or his son Benjamin. They may have been children of Richard and therefore siblings of Benjamin or they may been cousins of Benjamin.

In the 1855 State Census of Alabama for Blount County, Benjamin is listed as one male over 21, one female over 21, one male under 21 and one female under 21. He is listed next to his father in law, Robert Mercer Barry (listed as Bury on the census), his wife and one male under 21.

Their daughter Funnetta was born December 19, 1859 in Blount County, Alabama. Their son Edward H. was born September 30, 1862 in Searcy County, Arkanasas. So they moved from Alabama to Arkansas sometime between 1860 and 1862. At some point some of the family moved to Dardanelle, Arkansas. The McClungs were accompanied to Wiley's Cove from Alabama by members of the Barry family.

Benjamin lived next to Aramissa McClung, his sister, and her husband Lewis Branum in Searcy County, Arkansas in 1870. Family stories concerning Benjamin while he lived in Searcy County, Arkansas during the Civil War, tell of Benjamin hiding out in caves whenever the Northern army came around trying to conscript him. The Yankees tried to get all the southerners they could.

Benjamin's and Elizabeth' son James Washington moved to Decatur, Wise CO, Texas in about 1885. Benjamin and family followed a year later. Then in February of 1897 they moved to the Cheyenne Nation or Territory, what is now Oklahoma. Benjamin Franklin McClung passed away June 23, 1906 in Sentinel, Washita, Oklahoma, United States. He was buried at Huckleby's Farm, Carter, Oklahoma, United States.
