Hugh McClure[1]
Hugh McClure b. 12 Oct 1769[2] County Armagh, Ireland.
Hugh was a native of Armagh, Ireland and an early Montgomery County settler.[3] He went on to become one of Clarksville's prominent businessmen.[4][5][6]
"Hugh McClure was one of the early citizens of Clarksville and one of the wealthiest in the early settlement. He was here contemporaneous with Colonel Crusman and others about 1800 or a few years later. It is said that he built the first brick house in the town, which stood until late years just below the Tobacco Exchange on the old Providence street, the property recently purchased from the Henry estate by Dr. Kincannon and occupied with small cottages. It was then the largest storehouse in town. Hugh McClure and James Elder, father of Joshua Elder, owned jointly a large body of land along the Western and Northern slope and on the east side of the Public Square and Franklin street. They divided the land, McClure drawing that along the river slope, and Elder the upper part; and the McClure family thought they were lucky in getting the most valuable lot at that time."[7]
In 1820, Hugh had a small store where he kept a stock of mixed dry goods and groceries.[8]
Hugh McClure married Susan Gibson b. 1783 d. 1835 d/o Sarah Hampton b. 1759 d. 1829 and Edwin Gibson b. 1752 d. 1819 (went from Virginia to Tennessee).[1] Edwin Gibson ( s/o John Gibson Sr and Susannah Wilson) and Sarah Hampton (d/o John Hampton and Mary ----- grandaughter of William Hampton and Martha Catlett great-granddaughter of John Hampton and Mary Mann d c 1690 Gloucester Co Va as well as Thomas Catlett and Martha Thornton) ancestors of Hilliard Officer Wood Jr (via DNA match).[4]

Hugh died 26 Mar 1828 Montgomery Co., TN and left a will in that place naming his widow Susan as the Executrix. An April 1839 probate record stated that she had died. Joseph Bowers was ordered by the court to be the Administrator of the estate .[10] For those interested, his family bible records may also be found online at the Tennessee State Library Archive.
At the time of the 1820 United States Federal Census, Hugh had 10 slaves, as follows:[11]

Slaves - Males - 14 thru 25 | 1 |
Slaves - Males - 26 thru 44 | 1 |
Slaves - Females - Under 14 | 3 |
Slaves - Females - 26 thru 44 | 1 |
Total Slaves | 10 |
On 22 Apr 1824, Hugh purchased from Joseph Barber "a negro man named Dick about twenty five years old for the sum of five hundred dollars."[12]
In his Feb 1828 will, Hugh made reference to slaves, without any specific names or descriptions.[13]
WikiTree's Location Field shows Montgomery Co, TN being formed in 1836. In 1796 TN became the 16th state and Tennessee County in TN was divided into Montgomery and Robertson Counties with Clarksville in Montgomery County.[14]
The Pennsylvania, U.S. Septennial Census shows a "freeman" (or single man) Hugh McClure residing in Fannett, Franklin, Pennsylvania in 1786.[15] A John McClure was listed as a head of household on the same census. John Elder was another freeman on that census. In Clarksville, Hugh purchased property with a James Elder.[16]
Some sources indicate that Hugh was from County Armagh, Ireland, while others indicate that he was from County Antrim, Ireland. He was likely of Scottish heritage.
