Gertrude McConnell was born on May 1, 1831[1], in Halifax, Nova Scotia to Matthew Haines McConnell, 38, and Gertrude Hankinson, 36. She married John Major, 1817-1876, son of Thomas Major and Hannah Smith, in about 1854 in Canada. By 1857 they emigrated to Arenac County, Michigan.
The 1870 U.S. Census finds the family living in Arenac, Bay County (now Arenac County), Michigan. The household included: John Major 54, Gertrude Major 38, Joanna Major 15, William Major 13, Gustas Major 11, Evaline Major 10, Unaviliar (Arvilla) Major 5, Olive Major.
Gertrude's husband, John, died in Feb. 1876. The 1880 census finds her at age 47, widowed, living with William Major 23, Villie (Arvilla) Major 16, Olive Major 14, Adelia Major 8.[2]
By 1900, Gertrude, widowed, age 68, was living in Standish, Arenac, MI and was head of household. Other household members included her widowed son, William Major, 43; Augustus Whedon, 17, boarder; Emma Gannon, 38, boarder.
She died on October 15, 1902[3], in Watervliet, Michigan, at the age of 71, and was buried in Arenac County, Michigan.
