Biography

Joseph McCool was born on 17 Jan 1807 in Miami County, OH. He was the son of Gabriel McCool and Susannah Ramsey.

He married Susanna Thompson (1809-1849) on 27 Jun 1827 in Miami County, OH.[1] Their children are believed to be:

1830 US Census:[2] Joseph McCool was living in Vermillion Co, IN. His household included:

  • 1 free white male 20 thru 29 - Joseph
  • 1 free white female 20 thru 29 - Susanna
  • 1 male under 5 - John
  • 1 female under 5 - Jane

1840 US Census:[3] Joseph McCool was living in Parke Co, IN. His household included:

  • 1 free white male 30 thru 39 - Joseph
  • 1 free white female 20 thru 29 - Susanna
  • 1 male 10 thru 14 - John
  • 1 male 5 thru 9 - Richard
  • 2 females 5 thru 9 - perhaps Mary Ann and Jane?
  • 1 male under 5 - Jesse
  • 1 female under 5 - Margot

Joseph's wife died in 1849, perhaps due to the birth of their daughter Susanna. It's unclear what happened to all of their children but they seem to have been farmed out to other family members. Jeremian and Delila, for example, were taken in by the Engle family.[4]

1850 US Census:[5] Joseph was listed as 41yo and born in OH. He was living in Vermillion Co, IN with his parents Gabriel (66; TN) and Susannah (64; SC). The household also included his sister Phebe McCool (31; OH), his sister Nancy (McCool) Hollingsworth Emery (29; OH), Nancy's son Cyrus Hollingsworth (7; IN), Nancy's daughter Phebe E Emery (3; IL), and (Joseph's daughter?) Susanna McCool (1; IN).

Research Notes

The death date of the Joseph McCool is unknown. He is often confused with his distant cousin Joseph McCool (1811 KY-1886 IN).
