Biography
David James McCord was the son of Joseph McCord and Hannah Turquand. He graduated from South Carolina College in 1816, studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1818. In 1818, he also married Emmeline Wagner. From 1825 till 1827 he was state reporter, and in 1825 he was elected Mayor of Columbia, South Carolina.
Between 1828 and 1830 he travelled in Europe and witnessed the revolution in Paris. He returned to Carolina during the nullification excitement, entered the legislature, and was active as an advocate of extreme state rights.
In 1836 he retired from the bar and became President of the State Bank in Columbia. He was a Trustee of South Carolina College. His first wife, Emmeline, passed away in 1839. In 1840, after marrying Louisa Susannah Cheves, he devoted himself to agriculture as a cotton planter.
In 1850 David was enumerated in Columbia, Richland County, South Carolina where he was living with his wife, Louisa, and three children.[1][2]
He died in 1855 and is buried at Lang Syne Cemetery, Fort Motte, Calhoun County, South Carolina.[3]
David McCord had the following wives:
