Ellen McCormack was born in 1865 in Coolagarry, Kilcar[1]. She was the eldest child of Patrick McCormack and Bridget McDonnell. Her godparents were John and Brigid McDonnell.
Ellen was four years older than her sister Mary. Mary contracted the deadly typhus fever in 1883 and was terribly sick for three weeks. Ellen was eighteen years old at the time and probably helped care for her. Mary died on 27 Oct 1883, aged fourteen years.
Her mother died before 1900. She lived with her elderly father and brother John in their three roomed thatched cottage with three front windows[2].
Her father died in 1905 and John married Margaret Looby the following year. She continued to live with them and helped Margaret keep house and care for her young children. John inherited the family farm, which had stables, a cow house, calf house, piggery, fowl house, barn and shed[3].
Ellen became sick with cancer of the stomach and was moved to the infirmary ward of Athlone Workhouse. She died there in 1917 aged fifty two[4].
