Biography

Mary was the second of seven children in the family of Manus and Catherine O'Grady McCormick.[1] Her father, who had been the hotelkeeper in the small community of Macton, Ontario, died when she was about 14 years old, but her family remained on their farm for years to come.[2]

Mary married Jacob Walter when she was 26 years old.[3] In 1901 they were farming in Wellesley Township and had six children.[4] In 1911, Jacob sold the Wellesley farm, [5] and were then farming the east half of Lot 8, Concession 2 in Peel Township.[6] Three years later, they took over Mary's family farm from her brother James.[7]Their youngest son Lawrence Harald died at age 14 in 1918.[8] Their son Edward took over the farm in 1919.[9] Jacob and Mary were back on a farm in Wellesley Township with three of their children in 1921.[10]

Mary died at age 79[11] and is buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Macton, Ontario.[12]
