Biography

Gladys Evelyn Miles was born in Hutchinson, Kansas on June 6, 1933 to Carl McCormick and Francis Evelyn (Astle) McCormick. She passed on Wednesday, December 23, 2020 at Mount Hope Nursing Home in Mount Hope, Ks.

Evelyn grew up in Haven Kansas and married Delton Miles on January 30, 1950. They played house for 70 years on their farm south of Mount Hope Kansas.

Delton preceded her in death on June 28, 2020. Evelyn dearly loved being involved with church activities. She was a member of the Mount Hope Bible Fellowship Church where she was involved in various activities such as teaching Sunday school and Women’s Fellowship. Her love for the Lord was strong and the penciled notes in the margins of her bible reflect God’s love and forgiveness in the life she lived.

After she married Delton, she made a lovely home on the farm and they added four children and thus, she was very busy. One of the busiest times was harvest time. During harvest season, she prepared four meals a day. But the most remembered meal was the one her family would eat in the field in the shade of the combine with her four children and husband. Sandwiches and ice tea were served in Mason jars along with cookies for dessert. And we cannot forget the chocolate milkshakes late at night after getting home from the field.

Some of the things that Evelyn is remembered for are; She worked at the First National Bank in Mount Hope Kansas. Mr. Don Porter asked her to come work at the local bank where she was employed for 22 years before retiring. She spent those 22 years caring for the bank clients…knowing most clients, and their children, often, their grandchildren, by name…daily, she invested in their lives and is remembered today for truly caring about others. We remember her driving a snappy green Chevrolet Monte Carlo back and forth to work. She would often give two dollar bills as tips- that was the banker in her. Everyone wanted to receive them, but nobody wanted to spend them.

She also was an EMT responder and we remember how she would drop everything, even in the middle of dinner to ride the ambulance to help someone in an emergency situation. She enjoyed music and sang in a local group of women called the Friendly Notes. They had great fun. She sang with her best friend, Bev Caffrey. She loved her family…we have so many memories, that we will treasure. Following a nice rain, she took the opportunity to teach her granddaughters the art of making mud pies, and all the kids knew where Nana kept the Red Hots, in that special jar in the corner cabinet of the kitchen. We remember her serving us breakfast at the table in the mornings, and lunch or dinner was not complete without a stack of buttered bread and jelly – listening, serving, loving…that was Nana. Evelyn (Evie) had a servant’s heart, and it was on display wherever she would go. She was admired for her joy-filled personality and her “can do” spirit. She was respected in the community, but most of all, she was deeply loved and cherished by husband and her family. Her Christian faith was evident in her daily life and her family is forever grateful for her example. She is truly one in a million and will be sorely missed until we meet again in Heaven
