Biography

Samuel was born in Ohio [5 & 7]. At some point in time he moved to Indiana. He married Nancy Robbins in 1845 in Fulton County, Indiana [1]. They had 2 children, two girls. Sadly Nancy died 17 days after giving birth to the second child. Samuel married Nancy's older, widowed sister Sarah Davidson in 1852 in LaPorte County, Indiana [2]. They had one child, a girl. Sarah died in 1869. Samuel married a third time to Mahala Esterday in 1873 in Cass County, Indiana [4]. They had one child, a son. Samuel and Mahala were divorced in 1893 when he threw her out of the house because he discovered she was married before and never divorced. Samuel worked as a grocer. He died in 1901 [8 & 9] and was buried in Spring Creek Christian Church Cemetery in Cass County, Indiana [9].

6. The Logansport Reporter for December 13, 1893, page 4, carried the following: "The Unusual Portion of Mrs. Mahala McCoy. Her Suit for Divorce Is Answered With One. For Annulment of Marriage Contract by Mr. McCoy. Samuel McCoy entered suit today against Mahala McCoy for annulment of marriage contract. It is alleged that the defendant, at the plaintiff's marriage with her, already had one husband living. Jacob Esterday upon his oath swears that the defendant Mrs. McCoy, is his daughter; that she was married to Wm Malloy in the fall of 1863, in Ohio, and that Malloy is still living and undivorced from her. Samuel McCoy, the plantiff, is a prominent citizen of Adamsboro, and was formerly justice of the peace there. He was married to the defendant, Mahala McCoy, June 25, 1873, at Logansport, Rev. Wright, pastor of M. E. Church officiating. She then represented to him that her former husband Wm. Malloy was dead. They have lived together twenty years. The suit which will come as a great surprise to the many friends and acquanitances of this well known couple, is filed by Mr. McCoy is an answer to the suit for divorce filed by Mrs. McCoy Dec.2."

7. The Longwell-Cummings Company Gazatteer of Cass County, Indiana for 1897-1898 (Volume IV) lists Samuel M. McCoy as the Justice of the Peace for Adams Township. His P.O. Address is listed as Adamsboro.

8. 1900 U.S. Census for the State of Indiana, Cass County, Miami Township (Saml. M. McCoy, age 74, born in Ohio, working as a grocer). [Census available on ancestry.com.]

9. Indiana State Board of Health. Certificate and Record of Death.

10. The Daily Pharos for Saturday, March 16, 1901, page 5, carried the following: "DEATH OF SAMUEL MCCOY Samuel H. McCoy, a well known resident of Hoovers died this morning at 11 o'clock, aged seventy-six years. The deceased was a resident of Cass county for about fifty years and formerly conducted a grocery store at New Waverly and recently at Hoovers. He leaves two daughters, Mrs. J. B. Skinner and Mrs. T. P. Swigart of this city. The funeral will be held Monday morning at 10:30 o'clock from the Spring Creek Christian church in Clay township. Interment in the cemetery adjoining."
