Jane McCoy was one of four children of Alexander McCoy and Christiana McDonald who were Scottish pioneer residents in the vicinity of West Finley, Washington County, Pennsylvania. She lived on their farm with her parents and three siblings; Alexander, Jr., Nancy and Charlotte. Jane's father, Alexander, Sr., was one of the first elders of the "Three Ridges" Presbyterian Church. The McCoys were still living on their farm in West Finley in 1789 when nine members of the Macintosh family were killed by Indians. When a lone 14-yr-old escaped, Jane's brother-in-law, George Sutherland, ran out to rescue her.
