1850 and 1860 Census records for Clayton, Adams County, IL show Reuben McCoy with wife Octavia and children: Albert, Susan, and Melanethan.
Mr. McCoy was the founder of Clayton, and was known as an eloquent preacher of the gospel, and was universally beloved. He was born in Kentucky, emigrated to Illinois, and located at Quincy in 1884. He founded the Presbyterian church at Clayton and many other churches of that denomination in Adams and adjoining counties. He was hospitable and liberal, and his life was passed in acts of benevolence.
