Biography

Andrew was born in 1842. He was the son of William McCoy and Roxcelia Woodward. He passed away about 1862.

The following story comes from the Clinton County, NY, Records 1861-1865 Facebook Page:

DIED ON HIS WAY HOME - The 1st Engineers regiment was organized under Col. Edward W. Serrell at New York City and was often called, Serrell’s engineers. The companies were mustered into the United States service for three years in the city. Andrew J. McCoy’s Company I was mustered in on December 13, 1861, after he enlisted in Ellenburg on November 25th. His company was made up of men from New York City, Newburgh, Schuyler Falls, Mooers Forks, Goshen, Saranac, Piermorat, Plattsburgh, and Centreville in addition to Ellenburg.

Companies G, I and K left the State for Port Royal, SC, under Colonel Serrell on December 14, 1861, and the regiment first served in the Department of the South’s 10th Corps. The regiment was split into various components and was employed on the east coast, from South Carolina to Florida.

The men all signed up to serve for three years, however, Andrew only served for four months and was discharged for disability from Hilton Head, SC, on March 26, 1862.

The Ellenburg Town Clerk’s Records of 1865 for returning soldiers says, Andrew died in New York City on his way home from the Army to Ellenburg Corners to his parents’ farm. His father, William, was born in Ireland and he married his mother, Roxcelia Woodward, who was born in Maine, on Isle la Motte, VT, in 1834. Although his parents and other relatives are buried in the Ellenburg Corners Cemetery, sadly, no record of Andrew’s grave has been found yet.
